Dignity or Red Tape – where do You stand?
It was thought that the weather earlier in the year at the Capital event in Edinburgh was pretty poor but again the day of the Capital Event London delegates were faced with flooding in the South and West and severe disruption to the transport system in to London. Only a few didn’t quite make it and some struggled in a little late resulting in just on 60 delegates.
He introduced David Wetherell from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) who gave a short presentation outlining some work his department is currently doing to examine the experiences the care industry have had following inspections carried out under the Fire Safety Order as well as their perception of the new CQC inspection regime.
Patricia Kearney, Director of Adult Services, Social Care Institute for Excellence in Social Care (SCIE), then gave a talk with a theme that explored how dignity and health and safety fit together.
She spoke about the way looking after people links to looking after the workforce. Patricia also described enduring conditions that lead to complex needs, sometimes also involving the Mental Capacity Act, and the challenges around linking dignity and health and safety together when delivering care in an excellent way.
Two Breakout Sessions followed where a choice could be made by delegates.
Session 1 was given by Bob Taylor, MD of NANT, and put Water Hygiene and Water Safety – Under the Spotlight.
Bob explained that there are two main areas of risk – bacterial contamination (Legionella, Pseudomonas, etc.) and scalding from hot water. He described legionella bacteria, the control measures employed and the way it is normally spread through various types of aerosol. He then outlined pseudomonas which lives in biofilm and has humans as the main carrier, they infect taps which in turn infects the water. Control measures are similar to legionella.
Session 2 was given by Carol Harris,Food Safety Adviser Leicestershire County Council. Entitled Hydration & Nutrition Affecting Dignity, Carol began by explaining that food was not just a fuel and people’s likes and dislikes need to be considered so that they enjoy eating. She outlined the Social Care Act 2008, outcome 5, which covers meeting nutritional needs of older persons and went on to explain the consequences when we don’t get it right.
A healthy, balanced diet was the aim but that is not the same thing for all people and special diets have to be understood and explored. Carol closed by explaining the barriers to eating well and said that no meal, however healthy, is of no benefit if it is not eaten and enjoyed.
